TM2's Class Treaty

In TM2 we have a class treaty. We have to follow the things on our treaty so that we're being a HERO and being responsible. It reminds us how to act so that we can learn. Our class treaty helps us to remember to think before we speak, use safe hands and feet and kind words. 

It pretty much means that we're just being nice people and showing respect to everyone no matter who they are in our classroom.

We also have to be CyberSmart and look after our devices and ourselves when we're online. We make sure that we're kind, sensible and safe online. We also make sure that we use Des and Troy when we're carrying our Chromebook.

All About TM2

Hello we are TM2 and we want to tell you about our class. We have two ends in our class, one is TM1 and we are TM2. We are year 3 and 4s and Miss Walters teaches us with Ms Lange.

In TM2 we use ClassDojo to give out rewards and points for when we're being good and being responsible with others. We've been colouring our name tags on our boxes and organising our stationery so that we can find everything when we need it. We visited the pool and the library yesterday on our first day back. We went swimming and got to jump in. Ms Lange challenged us to see who could pretend they were sitting on the bottom of the pool reading a book. 

We also have some posters to help us with building a growth mindset. It encourages us to do new things even if you find it difficult or hard. We have a timetable on the whiteboard so that we know what we're doing all day and we have to remind Miss W to change all the time! We're really lucky to have a school pool and a library. We also have our own chromebooks and we're learning to respect them and be Cybersmart with them. We get to have a sandwich for Carb Break every morning. We get to choose peanut butter, marmite, vegemite or butter.

Book Character Day

Yesterday was Book Character dress up day for Hooked on Books Week! We had a school full of Harry Potter's, Hermione Granger's, princesses, super heroes and many more!

We have done a big focus around reading this week and had some great books! We started the week with Where's Walrus which you will find just below in it's own post, then we moved onto A Knit and a Knot, Ingenious Jean and Betsy Came to Babysit.

Hooked on Books Week

Hooked on Books Week is here and we've kicked off with Where's Walrus, a book with absolutely no words! We 'read' the book and then created the writing based on all the information we could glean from the amazing illustrations!

Happy Diwali!

This week we have celebrated Diwali in TM2.

We watched this video to help us understand the story of Diwali properly and then we created our own class book together. We found out that Diwali is the festival of light and celebrates when good won against evil and Ram and Sita were reunited, in the story of Diwali. People who celebrate Diwali take time to spend with their family and friends and light lots of candles, lamps and sometimes even fireworks.

We also looked up mehendi patterns online and designed our own. Miss W bought some henna and we were able to get our patterns recreated on our own hands! It was so cool.




We had to edit some of our designs when we got to actually using the henna though, because some of our designs were too big to fit on our little hands. We are going to print our photos of our henna and put them on the wall with our designs too!

Happy Diwali!

Kapa Haka Performance

Yesterday and last night some very special people in our class performed at the Uru Manuka Cultural Festival. Our kids rocked! They looked amazing in their Kapa Haka uniforms kindly organised and sourced by the PTA and we are all so proud of them! Can you spot someone that you know?




Mrs Taylor and Mr Robertson said that our Kapa Haka group had the youngest children in it, because we had kids from Year 1 all the way up to Year 8, but most schools only had kids from Year 3 up!

Check out a bit of a video of the group - the sound quality isn't amazing but everyone was so impressed with their performance!

Butterfly Lady!

On Friday we had the Butterfly Musketeer come and visit us! We had great fun learning about the different stages of a caterpillar's life and how they turn into butterflies. Brayden read us a poem about caterpillars and butterflies and we got to see lots of cool stuff.



We also got to dress up like butterflies and get some dramatic acting to show each other how the butterfly dries off its wings after coming out of a chrysalis.



We learnt heaps of new things like how to feed caterpillars (only ever swan plants, nothing else!) and how to look after them, how long they live for and how to work out if they are a boy or a girl!

Big and Small Problems

Today we talked about big problems and small problems. We watched a readaloud of The Bad Case of Tattle Tongue on youtube. This was a great book by Julia Cook!

Being a Responsible Citizen in the Toilets

For our HERO work this week, we are looking at being a Responsible Citizen in the toilets. Part of this is turning off the taps. We had a look at a video of a house being flooded by water. We decided we didn't want that to happen to our classroom so we had to make some poster to show everyone.

Hana's was picked out being beautiful and colourful. It caught our attention and made us think about our rules. Have a look at her work below.

Hana's Got Talent!

Each Friday we have Share Day in TM2 and some special people get to be class reporters. Today we were blown away by Hana's sharing... Hana brought in her new ukelele and wowed us with her talent.

She explained about how she walked around the market trying to find the Ukulele stall and eventually she found it. She talked about the tuning and then we asked her if she could play.

Then something amazing happened! Hana started playing some chords and the beginning of a song and then she began singing! Miss Walters said the ukulele chords reminded her of peaceful music by a beach somewhere hot and the singing was amazing. Our whole class sat in awe of Hana's amazing talent!

We took a video and we thought we'd better share her talent with the blogging world because it was so fantastic! Take a look and keep an eye out for Hana, the rising star with her ukulele and wonderful singing!

Speech Finalists!

On August 22nd we had our school speech finals. Hana, Angel-Mey, Zoe and Hasan were picked to be our class finalists. They were picked because they used interesting words, they kept looking at the audience and they could give their speech without anything in front of them.

Unfortunately Hana and Angel-Mey were both sick so couldn't stand up with everyone at the finals,  but Zoe and Hasan were representing us so well, so we thought we'd better share all their videos here! Have a watch!

Matariki Afternoon

We have been really unlucky with the weather recently and our Matariki afternoon yesterday had been postponed for a week because of the rain!

We loved celebrating Matariki. We had our Kapa Haka group and Matua to lead them in a powhiri to welcome everyone together. Then we split into our house groups to do some Matariki crafts to celebrate the Māori New Year. 

If you look closely you can see the stars of Matariki in the sky!

After we did our crafts we tidied up and then went outside to join together again and have some baked spuds with lots of yummy toppings. We sat together to celebrate Matariki with our school and families.

Personal Space Test

Today we had Belinda our Public Health Nurse visit our class to talk to us about personal space.

We started off talking about our personal space being like a bubble! We used a hula hoop to show how big our personal bubble should be. How would you feel if someone was in your personal bubble?

We explored how we would feel if a stranger came up and gave us a hug and compared that to how we would feel if it was our mum. We had a lovely volunteer Hasan to be our assistant and he explained how he would feel if Kane came into his bubble and how he would feel if Belinda came into his personal space.

Hasan said that he wouldn't like a stranger in his personal bubble but he's happy for his friend Kane to be there. Hasan said 'I didn't know Belinda until this afternoon but I do know Kane!'.

We also talked about how we should think about how other people would feel if we got in their space. How would someone feel if you gave them a hug after 3 days of not seeing them? Phoenix reckons that it could make someone feel nervous if you don't know them very well. Zoe remembered starting school here and feeling sad because she didn't know anyone but by the end of the day she had made lots of friends. She said 'I didn't mind my new friends being in my personal bubble at the end of the day'.

What should we say if people are in our space and we don't like it? We can say stop it I don't like it, or we could say excuse me, can you please step back a bit you're in my bubble.

Remember - it is always okay to tell someone to stop something that you aren't comfortable with :)

Wet Weather

We've had a ton of rain recently! Remember to bring your wet weather gear and stay out of the puddles before and after school!

Who says we don't have fun...?

Corey Baker - Antarctic Dancer

Yesterday Corey Baker came to visit us at YMS. He is a very experienced dancer and choreographer and he came to share his experience with us. He was able to visit the Antarctic to create a dance there to share his ideas and opinions about global warming and how it's affected the ice and snow in Antarctica.

He used to go to our school and it was great for him to see how our school had changed, and great for our class to meet someone that used to come to our school that is doing some great things in the world.

We also learned about life in Antarctica and how he created his dance there. He had to wear so many layers of clothes and he brought them for us to see and feel. Everyone found it funny to learn about why the fur is on the outside of the gloves they wear there!  

Corey also did some dance activities with us to get us moving and thinking about what it would be like in the Antarctic. We have a heap of fun and were really lucky to have a visitor like Corey!
