Sugary Science!

We have looked really hard at the different types of drinks this week and how much sugar is in each one!

We looked at coke, sprite, red bull, fruit juice, V, ginger beer, strawberry milk, flavoured water and powerade zero.

We had to work out which one had the most sugar and then order the drinks from the most to the least sugar. We also put the teaspoons of sugar for each drink into a bag so we could see how much sugar was dissolved into the liquid.

Then we looked at how sugar can give us cavities in our teeth, because of the bacteria in our mouth. If we don't brush our teeth and we eat or drink lots of sugar then the bacteria starts to attack your teeth and make holes called cavities in your teeth, because they make acid.

What drinks do you drink and how much sugar is in them?

  1. Hi Te Māhuri,

Your sugary science sounds so fun! How did you figure out how much sugar was in each drink? It was also really interesting to learn about cavities, and how sugar is bad for our teeth. Lots of us like fizzy drink, but we know not to drink it too much.

  2. Hi Team Toi Toi!

It was super fun! We had to look at the labels on the back of the bottles and find out how many grams of sugar there were in each bottle and then we had to weigh it out in teaspoons into little bags. Then we lined up in the right order!

We like sugary fizzy drinks too but we learnt that it's better to have water or milk for our teeth, and sometimes have fizzy drinks. It's even better to have sugar free fizzy drinks!

What are your favourite drinks? Have you learnt anything about your favourites?

  13. Good Morning Te Māhuri,

Fascinating to learn about sugar quantities in processed drinks. Room 7 is wondering what drink contained the most suger??? Was it V, coke, sprite, powerade or ginger beer?

Moe is wondering why you selected the cavity video and how did you find it please?

Who inspired you to learn about dental hygiene?

We have a dental nurse visiting our school at the moment, to check we are all healthy and taking good care of our teeth.

Mrs Pohlen thought it was interesting to learn that the enamal on our teeth is the strongest part of our body.

    Wishing you a great day.
